News is usually defined by a dictionary as "a report of recent events or previously unknown facts". Contradictory to it having a "s", it is not a plural noun. So in general, news is totally new. It is what is unknown. It is what is happening in the world today. However, to be more precise, news is information which is intended for a certain readers. For example, what happens in Mexico is not truly that much of a big deal in a far away place, let's say, Africa.
A commentary, are highly-intellectual comments made by individuals on a particular text or matter. For example, a commentary regarding cholesterol may target the types of cholesterol, which is good and bad, and what their differences are. They are not just some random comments like we find in most blogs these days. Instead, they are highly intellectual and well-thought of remarks that add value to the textual content, or even to a news or news article.
News and Commentary work hand in hand in a newspaper. Without one, the other would exist. However, the paper would not be complete with no informative information and the humorous and entertaining commentary.
