Puerto Vallarta Has A Great Array Of Incredible Beaches
For years, beaches have been Puerto Vallarta's leading draw. Over twenty six miles of beaches extend around the Bay of Banderas, ranging from action-packed party spots to private coves available only by boat.
In Town -- The easiest to reach is Playa Los Muertos, just south of the Rio Cuale. The water can tend to be rough, although the wide beach is home to a diverse array of palapa restaurants that offer food, as well as beach-chair service. Playa Mismaloya is in an exquisite sheltered cove about 6 miles south of town along Highway 200. The water is clear and beautiful, great for snorkeling off the shore. Entrance to the public beach is just to the left of the Barcelo La Jolla de Mismaloya.
The Playa Boca de Tomatlan, just down the road, has numerous palapa restaurants where you can relax for the day -- you buy drinks, snacks, or a meal, and you can utilize their chairs and palapa shade. Las Animas, Quimixto, and Yelapa beaches provide a true sense of seclusion; they are reachable only by water. They are larger than Mismaloya, offer intriguing hikes, horseback riding to jungle waterfalls, and are similarly set up with restaurants fronting a beautiful beach. Overnight stays are also available at Yelapa.
North of Town -- The entire northern coastline from Bucerias to Punta Mita is a succession of sandy coves alternating with rocky inlets. For years the beaches to the north, with their lengthy, clean breaks, have been the popular region with regard to surfers. The broad sandy stretches at Playa Anclote, Playa Piedras Blancas, and Playa Destiladeras, all with palapa restaurants, have made them favorites among local residents interested in a quick getaway. At Playa Anclote you'll find a broad sandy beach with protected swimming areas, and a few great palapa restaurants.
The beautiful white-sand beach at Punta Mita, home of the Four Seasons, and Punta Mita Private Villas, is closed to road traffic, except for owners and guests of this residential resort development. You can hire a panga (small motor-driven boat) at Playa Anclote and have the captain take you to the Marietas Islands just off the coast. These uninhabited islands are a great spot for bird-watching, diving, snorkeling, or just exploring. Blue-footed booby birds (found only here, and in the Galapagos) are often spotted along the islands' rocky coast, and giant mantas, sea turtles, and colorful tropical fish swim among the coral cliffs. The islands are honeycombed with caves and private beaches--including the stunning Playa de Amor which only appears at low tide. Humpback whales congregate around these islands during the winter months. You can also visit these islands aboard one of the many day charters that embark from the cruise-ship terminal. Most of all, Puerto Vallarta beaches can fulfill a variety of expectations from one extreme to another.
