Waterloo Region A Vibrant And Diverse Area
The K-W area in southern Ontario is among the fastest developing and most economically advantaged districts in Canada. People considering moving to this area will find virtually all the advantages one finds in a bigger community like Toronto minus the hyper fast pace, long daily commutes and expensive living expenses. The focal point of this part of Ontario is the Grand River running through many of the areas towns and cities and has been a major player in its historical development.
According to the 2006 census, with 451,235 people, the Wateroo Region was the 11th largest CMA in Canada. The major cities in the Waterloo Region are Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge and it also includes numerous smaller towns and villages as well as a large and prosperous rural area.
Kitchener is the most populous city in the Regional municipality and the seat of the Waterloo Regional Municipality. In 2006 the population of Kitchener was 204,6682. The City of Waterloo located right beside Kitchener has has just under 100,000 residents. This does not include more than 20,000 temporary resident post-secondary students attending its two universities. The two cities actually abut each other and by most local residents are almost always called Kitchener-Waterloo or K-W.
Cambridge, the other major city in the area is located in the southern part of the region with a population of right around 120,000. Cambridge came into existence in 1973 with the amalgamation of the towns of Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair. Many local residents felt the merger was a "shotgun marriage" forced on them by the Ontario provincial government.
In the first decade of the new millenium The Region of Waterloo is among the most dynamic and diverse areas in Canada with some of the best farm land in Canada, two highly regarded Universities, a very stable financial and insurance industry, numerous manufacturing plants and a flourishing high tech sector centered around Research in Motion and other spinoff businesses from the region's two univeristies.
People settling in the Waterloo Region will find many varied job opportunities, a diversified cultural life, and unmatched educational facilities. K-W real estate is also considerably cheaper than similar homes in other Ontario cities such as Toronto or Ottawa.
The fact is, people living in Waterloo Region have an enviable combination. They have the advantages of living in a smaller urban centre while being ideally situated to take advantage of the amenities of major urban centres such as Toronto, Mississauga, London and Detroit.
